No Hot Water? Get It Back — Usually Same or Next Day

A cold shower is not a personality test. Mason repairs and replaces gas, electric and heat pump systems — with honest advice on whether your unit is worth fixing or done.

Sound familiar?

Hot Water Warning Signs

  • No hot water at all, or it runs out fast
  • Water takes ages to warm up or won't hold temperature
  • Rusty or discoloured hot water
  • Water pooling around the base of the tank
  • Popping, banging or rumbling from the unit
  • Pilot light keeps going out on gas systems

A leaking tank is usually terminal — but a failed valve, element or thermostat is often a cheap fix. The honest answer depends on age and condition, and you'll get it straight.

Repair when it's smart. Replace when it's time.

What To Do Right Now (And What Not To)

Do this now

  • Check the relief valve — a small trickle is normal, a stream is not
  • Electric: check the fuse/breaker labelled “hot water” hasn't tripped
  • Gas: check other gas appliances still work (if not, it may be supply)
  • Note the unit's age from the compliance plate — it helps Mason advise you fast

Don't do this

  • Don't keep relighting a pilot that keeps dropping out — something's wrong
  • Don't crank the thermostat to “fix” lukewarm water
  • Don't ignore a leaking tank — they fail suddenly, and always at the worst time
  • Don't buy a replacement unit before getting the size right for your household

Hot Water FAQs

Repair or replace — how do I decide?
Rule of thumb: if the tank itself is leaking, or the unit is 10+ years old and needs a significant repair, replacement usually wins on total cost. If it's a valve, element or thermostat on a younger unit, repair it. You'll get the honest maths before deciding.
How long does a replacement take?
A like-for-like swap is usually done within a few hours once the unit is on site. Same or next-day is often possible for common sizes — call early in the day for the best shot.
What size hot water system do I need?
Roughly: 1–2 people 125–160L electric (or 4-person-rated continuous flow), 3–4 people 250–315L, 5+ people 315L+ or high-flow continuous. Mason sizes it to your actual household and usage, not the biggest invoice.
Gas, electric or heat pump?
Depends what supply you have, your roof/space, and running-cost priorities. Heat pumps cost more upfront but far less to run, and rebates can apply. You'll get plain-English pros and cons for your home, not a sales pitch.
